Review: The Soul Sphere: Book 1 The Shattered Sphere by David J. Adams (Books)

The Soul Sphere: Book 1 the Shattered SphereThe Soul Sphere: Book 1 the Shattered Sphere by David J. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I mostly liked this.. enough to, yes, buy the next book.. so first and foremost I say that I placed the second in my wish list and will purchase it soon.. when I can justify the three dollars.

Pros:

This is just like the fantasy that got me sucked in reading the genre for just about all my life. I enjoy the journeys that are created. The friendships that journey can create - the hardships overcome.. and even the prejudice.

The prejudice was one of the things I liked the best, besides the next thing I will go over. The characters had very good attitudes and worked well together no matter the qualms between races - though check cons for why I did not think this was 'very' well done.

My favorite thing are the references to God.. they are very few, but the Paladin in the story really does have some sort of mystery about him and God. look at the bottom of this to see my 'Christian perspective' of the book.

Cons:

The characters do not really seem to 'grow' much. There are a few instances that take this into account(the account of possible prejudice and jealously), but nothing so big that character creation seemed to be too big. Certainly not very much was learned about each character, much like the author wanted to keep them all pretty much a mystery. I hope for more on that in the second.

If there had been a tiny bit more problems between the companions that they worked to overcome I think I would have a better like for that part of the tale. Although, to be honest it was refreshing to see a tale that brought such a group together so well and with so many differences between them. (i guess that would really a pro)

Christian Perspective:

I found the few references to God to be very well written and just enough mystery to keep a reader guessing, but I have my thoughts being the God that Rowan follows is one much like ours.. Savior and all..

"The Demon spit at the sight of the Savior's symbol. "I will pay you personal attention, human. .... Rowan held his sward before him, the white flame alive in the presence of the hellish creature. "My soul is not yours to torment. It belongs to one far more powerful."

Cool mention of 'belonging' and fears .. How he can put what fears he could have in this situation .. but instead rely on the faith of God.

"There was no thought in Rowan's mind, no anger or malice. There was only power and right ... he was in tune with both the natural and spiritual worlds."

This was probably on of my favorite parts in the book.. show righteous justice.. in the right way.. this can be done!

"My soul belongs to one greater than you."
"Oh. Him. Where is he, by the way?"

This was an argument very often brought up of God, I am interested to see if this comes up in the second..

"We must remember our struggle is to give them a future. Don't recall their despair unless it motivates you to press on. Hopelessness can be a disease - contagious and fatal. We must guard against falling prey to it."

and I just found this to be some really great advice on the thoughts of those that may have been hurt or killed .. or maybe just wounded by something you did verbally.. or an action.. not just hurt physically.. A great way to have a positive outlook on what you do.. to press on for the glory of God.
