I introduce to you on this very auspicious day that marks the day that I post this post that is auspicious.... THE PRINCESS AND THE GUY!!!
Yes, I know.. beautiful and handsome - glorious and terrifying!! This ... is imagination at its finest!!
Necessity is the mother of invention | |
Obviously they don the outfits of "The Princess" and "The Guy" ... granted they have not come up with the most original names, but when they have put on these outfits.. they are no longer Kyley and Elijah - those two kids are somewhere else - who knows where, but just not here! Now... they may have picked up this from the way we do children's church, but I am not so positive - I believe that they have honest and pure imagination to thank for that.
This gift can be wonderful as well as terrifying! Let me give you a few examples of wonderful:
1. You can play with your friends/brother/sister/dog/toy and be/have/own anything you wish
2. The rules can change at any moment (to your benefit)
3. Everything is perfect
And now a few examples of terrifying (from my childhood):
1. You can vividly 'see' that old lady with a long knife right outside your window above your bed
2. When in the pool by yourself there is a shark in the deep end (this had me swimming out of the pool multiple times and I would feel like the flash because I would do it so quickly... a terrified flash.. but still)
3. *that guy over there does not like me... they are talking about me.... I am no good... *
Imagination is awesome, until you get to the point where you are imagining the worst in everyone around you..
I love imagination... what it can create entertains EVERYONE... where do you think TV and MOVIES come from (I know you knew that) Though instead of focusing on the 'bad' here - let us look at 'the mother of invention'.
My kids were grounded... It is not as 'easy' to get grounded as an adult (in the greatest extent this can mean prison, but that is not what I am talking about) I mean grounded from something that you just need to take a step back from for a little while. When I play the right...wrong video game and am not doing so hot at it, I can get really steamed ... I need a time out - I NEED TO BE GROUNDED.
We think that this is punishment for not acting right during that activity, but my kids reminded me what this really is about. It is the same reason it is important to fast! When you pick something to fast - you are saying that instead of doing/eating/watching THIS I will focus on THIS (God, Family, Bible, Ministry, etc).
When I am doing nothing - I feel much like I am dieing ... I NEED to do something for God each day to feel alive - I am not sure where you stand on this, but I just do not feel right if I have not done something for God. It is part of my focus - The great part about it, is that soon you will not even feel as if you are grounded from whatever you put to the side, because you will get everything you need from the 'new' activity that replaced it.
Instead of having the television dictate to them what was entertainment, they were forced to create a new form of entertainment - that is now bleeding into time when they are ALLOWED to watch television.
Never think that not having something that you had is bad - it is a time for you to learn something else - it is a time that your imagination can work - I am grateful to God that He has held me in ministry, because I truly understand what my old Youth Pastor used to say, "If I were not in the ministry, I know I would not be able to live right" (quotes at this moment do not dictate exact quotation, just that someone other than me said this)
Is there something you may need to GROUND yourself from? Is there something you would never to have expected to happen because you could not do something that you 'normally' do? I would like to hear it in the comments!
And because Kyley is a nut and will not go to bed on time, coming up with any excuse to get out of her bed ... here is a second picture of The Princess and The Guy! I love my kids!

1. "The guy" isn't wearing pants, but whatelse is new.
ReplyDelete2. I have witnessed you swim a mad dash from the "shark". It was funny and disturbing at the same time.
3. I love me a good God-ordained fast, from just about anything. It's not easy but you are right in that it frees up your time to focus on much greater things.
1. I do not think that "The Guy" owns any pants..
ReplyDelete2. I apologize for putting you through that
3. amen!
It seems that as I've grown older I've forgotten what it is to imagine things in the real world. Like the tiki hut thing we built at the party.
ReplyDeleteI've spent my so much time imagining things in my own world (my blog mostly) and yet I haven't been realizing the true wonderment that the imagination has to offer.
My point in saying all that is this. When God looks at a poor man that hasn't showered in a week he doesn't see a smelly good for nothing with tattered clothes. Neither should we. I don't mean with just poor people either. We as humans have a habit of judging people before we've even really met them.
Like the tiki hut we use our imaginations to see the real thing instead of what's actually there. I'm not saying that God uses his imagination when he looks at people or that we should. I'm only saying that when we see people we look into the spiritual, not make snap judgements, and above all love like Jesus.
Agreed and well said!!
