What is VBS - Vacation Bible School -
"Vacation"
Granted it has the word 'Vacation' in it, but to anyone, except for possibly the kids - this is no where near the truth! Interestingly after the second night of our VBS at Evolve Church (Undercover Academy) my wife said to me, " I need a vacation " which only later, as I started this post did I realize fit so nicely here - like a lego fitting to ... other legos.
VBS is FUN!
VBS is Work!
VBS is Awesome!
VBS is Hard Work!
VBS is FUN!
I go through these thoughts in my mind every year when we start VBS and honestly I have these thoughts during a vacation as well - and often find that I could use a vacation from my vacation at times.
"Bible"
Yes... The Bible is talked about, and sometimes even opened up and read. But, mostly it is the stories that get told - not really read from the Bible. We want the experience to be fun. And ... the Bible (shhhh) sometimes ... or MANY, by itself, can be pretty boring - even for adults. What is great is that each class covers the same story, but in differing ways. So the kids usually have a pretty firm grasp on the story and the lessons being taught.
"School"
Oh SNAP! Who thought that would get kids excited about an activity! I think that having Vacation before School puts "the wool" over their eyes. And then "on the flip side" Having school at the end shows the parents that we are teaching. About the Bible.
My first intro to a VBS was when I was working at the Goodtimes center with the YMCA and I had no idea it was a church function. It was an all day "affair" and I had no idea what was done there or that I would be working at them a few years in the future.
BUT first I would work at "Kids Crusades" which may be an even more misleading name!
Anyway. I have enjoyed having chance after chance to teach kids about Christ!
If your in or near the Montgomery AL area tonight or tomorrow (6/3/11 and 6/4/11) come check it out at Evolve Church (4500 Vaughn Rd)
