Father & Son Time Turned To Father Daughter Time (Blurb, Art)

Sometimes I get really awesome and great ideas that any other parent would be shamed over not thinking of doing that with their child... but they are never as awesome in action as in my head..... sometimes they go like this

I saw this 'puzzle' car in the dollar tree and thought to myself *ah HA. This would be a wonderful item to use to spend a few quality moments with my son, Elijah* so I pick it up and show it to Elijah, asking him if he would like to make it with me. He agrees and runs off to beat his mother in the back with the toy axe and sword he picked up earlier.

So now I am thinking *Awesome job, Derek, he is totally excited about doing this with you!*

Later, we get home and bring all of our purchases it.. The car stays in the bag it was in that ends up on the floor.  Kyley, I think, had not seen it yet - but when she did... she surprised me... kinda.  She began to beg me to no end about when we would be putting it together.  I would tell her over and over again that we bought it in mind to do it with Elijah and that she could help us when we had a chance to sit down and actually work on it.  No.. she could not take that as an answer.. she talked with her mom and somehow figured out a time when her, Elijah, and myself would be free to work in it. (last monday while we had some friends over cooking and eating dinner... I was not cooking)

So she had this planned out.. was completely and totally ready to get to work... Elijah... on the other hand - wanted to be wolverine... and run around the house like a crazy wild man would.  He did not work on it with us - AT ALL.

Kyley and I enjoyed our time working on this together, BUT ... let me give you bit of advice.. if the 'thing' you bought looks like it is a model.. and the packaging says that it is a puzzle... there is something terribly wrong.

This is what we had to work with to figure out how this went together

Yes ... of course my jaw dropped when I saw this... I am a drafter.. I draw plans for building things everyday, this was terrible (I know.. dollar tree...).

I almost wanted to put it together without them, but honestly it would have been so, so, so much more difficult... we got it done.. and I am greatly happy that we did.. Kyley was the 'painter'.. I was the part 'puller, outer' and 'assembly man' ...

Sometimes.. no matter how terrible the product, or ideas when getting the product.. we need to push through and use the instructions.

I know that I seem to always have ideas.. that are perfect and wonderful and are completely awesome and most certainly should be done exactly the way that I want them to, but it hardly -if ever- has happened that way at all in my life.

I am learning everyday to be able to accept the idea of the person next to me.  I can easily think that I am already good at this, and always do my best to let my fellow man get a chance to tell me how they think it should be done, but honestly ... I do not do it as well as I would believe I do.  My daughter showed me that here.  Not really with the building of the car, but with the idea that my three year old son would have been able to sit and work on this .. at all.  My girl did.. and I love it.. I am glad I caved and let her idea be the one that grew fruit.
