What derk taught on tonight... If you missed out!! (UNVEILED)

Lesson taught by derk, notes taken by Savannah

Kyleys prayer: "Jesus, i want this day to be special..."

1 Sam 27

Quick recap- David spared Saul's life... again. Waiting for God's timing of God's will.

"What is this chapter about?" :p Derek apparently doesn't know. David... allied... with... the philistines. Well, alright then.

Saul will never stop pursuing David, so he goes to the place where Saul cannot get him... with the Philistines.

V 8-12: David raided some nations. He left no one alive, but took livestock and clothes. Reported back to achish. Achish: " he (David) has made his people utterly abhor him... he will be my servant forever." David said he attacking southern Judea and other places that he did not attack. Killing the people he did attack so that they would not reveal his lies. Huh???

David gets to a point where he is desperate enough to join his enemy. When you are desperate, would you join with your enemy? Who is your enemy?

(David in this case had two enemies) lesser of two evils then? How is it that the philistines do not kill him? How did that even happen? God can give you favor with your enemies. Israel is a blessed nation. The Philistines couldn't beat him if they wanted to.

Is joining with his enemy losing or giving up in a way? How do we reason this out? " the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Why? Philistines knew David was on the run from Saul. they could have seen this as an oppirtunity to get info on Saul's kingdom. And they get his 600 men. Philistines had to have known David was God's annointed.

David might have thought he was taking away the temptation of killing Saul. Maybe it wasn't about Davids safety so much as it was about Saul's safety.

(BTW COMPLETE SPECULATION) :p

Was David actually lying? Covering his tracks? Why would it need to be stated that achish believed him if what David was saying was 100%? Wording of the story implies Davids falsehood.

In that time, could you join with your enemy, realistically?

We like to think that David was totally legit until Bathsheba. Is that true in light of this story?

Derk came up with a question " on the spot." Tim: what is this spot people speak of?" Was it a godly thing to lie to his enemy? Holocaust- hiding Jews. A valid lie? What is a valid lie? Handmaidens lied to pharoah in the day of moses birth. Rajab liied about the spies. Again, lesser of two evils?

God could have made another way than for David to lie. So is he wrong? David has choices. God isn't tellling him every specific step for him to take. We want to make this ok for David. But it is probably valid to say no, this is wrong.

God never said this man after his own heart never messed up.

We have the urge to justify wrong means by a good end. War, military, self-defense, etc. What do we do in these situations? All of us could think of a situation that we could justify by saying "i had no choice." When somebody says something is biblically wrong, the person struggling with that wants to jump to the conclusion "no it isn't, you just hate me." WE have to realize these situations aren't easy from inside them.

***Love needs to surpass the idea that something is biblically wrong.*** We either ignore right and wrong, or we ignore love. HOW DO WE BALANCE THEM? Jesus hung with dirty rotten sinners. We cant pass that off as "oh well that was Jesus." Jesus did not say "when i leave, you will do things that i couldn't do." He said "you will do things greater than i did." Somethimes we need that jerk Christian. If only to do the "convicting" which we follow up with compassion. (Did Abi just raise her hand?) What about paul? He had the balance. "I love you guys, you are aawesome. Now about these issues..." middle ground between faith and works. You cant believe dally without falling into that greatest commandment of love.

What do you think the Israelites thought when David joined the Philistines? They also knew Saul was after him. Who knows what's Saul was telling them about David, what kind of propaganda? We don't know that side of the story.

Each of us is a representative of Jesus Christ. That should affect our behavior, right? How do we responds when we are the ones being negarively judged? "They will know you by your love." How can we put sins on a scale? We are deciding who is and isn't going to hell? Yeah... right. It is not our job to convict of sin. That is what the LORD gave us the Holy Spirit for. And he convicts all sins equally.
