Solomon asks for wisdom

Solomon's first choice: "Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places." (verse 3) A thousand burnt offerings (verse 4)

Solomon's second choice: "and God said, “Ask what I shall give you." [...] Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”" (verses 5 and 9)

Solomon never specifically asked for wisdom, but what he specifically asked for is the definition of wisdom. Be specific with God and he will bless you accordingly.

The spoils of his choices: (verses 10-14)
  • wisdom
  • riches and honor
  • length of days (conditional based on his walk with God)
  • God's favor
Luke 18: the counter point
The Parable of the Rich Young Ruler

Ruler's first choice: “All these [commandments] I have kept from my youth.” (18:21)

Ruler's second choice: "But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich." (18:23) He did not choose to distribute his wealth and follow Christ.

The spoils of his choices:
  • his own wealth
  • NOT entrance to the kingdom of Heaven
What is one of the big differences?

God came to Solomon, whereas the ruler went to Jesus. Solomon was only seeking God, not the reward. The Ruler had everything, and was seeking more.  What is your main goal? To gain the reward or to serve God?

Do we wait for the voice of God before we rush forward into what we want? God has the foreknowledge and the wisdom to know what is best for you. If we come with the reward in our minds, we may be trying to rig the game, because all we care about is the reward. We don't care about our creator and what he wants for our lives.

When you ask God for choices, are you already willing to her his answer?

By the way, you cannot have Iron Man in a discussion like this.
Now you know.
