One particular event was at our local Walmart.
Ever since the Avengers movie dropped in theaters, my son has become a HUGE Hulk fan, and he has yet to even see the movie. We may not have helped by creating our own Children's Church curriculum pulled from the Avengers characters (Starting with Hawkeye), but anyway.. on with the tale..
My family and our friends are all quite fond of the claw machine. It is such a delight to win a cheap stuffed animal. We began to see the machines there actually had Avengers characters; Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Hulk is what we found first, so very quickly my entire family and a good friend of ours surrounded a machine; all hoping to win a wonderful little stuffed Avenger.
Elijah was BEGGING for Hulk, calling him Hulky. I decided it looked like a good bet to go for it. The claw dropped in a promising place.. began to lift and close.. Oh.. man it slipped out.. I only had one try, so our good friend Tim steps up and decides to have a go. He gets the claw into position and I walk to the side of the machine and note he should probably move it forward a bit, but of course he needs to check it himself (I would have too) and while still holding the joystick bends around the machine to have a look.
While we are diagnosing the proper location to hit the button, of course doing the most complicated mathematical proofs all in our head to be sure of our success Elijah runs up and slams the button for the claw to grab. EVERYONE, except Eli, cries foul for his action, but it does not take us long to instead look into the machine and hope against hope this last fifty cents will be the one to win. Maybe Eli could have gotten lucky...is it possible? ..
We watch, and even the guy sitting on the bench behind us is now on the edge of his seat in anticipation of what may be produced from Elijah's haste. The claw drops, closes, and lifts the Hulky into the air - each one of us holding our breath as it moves to the prize hole, knowing at any moment it could slip and be lost FOREVER (not really forever)!
It makes it there and the grin on my son's face as he opens the prize door and claims his Hulky is priceless. Hmmm.. to really and truly have faith like a child. Not only did my son win his own Hulk doll, but reminded me what real faith can be. It does not analyze every itty bitty little thing, but gives it to God and trusts He can take care of it.
How has your faith been recently?
