Free Programs
GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program
A free alternative to photoshop. The name should say it all, but this program is wonderful. I use it for all my graphic art and digital touch-ups.
VLC
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player and multimedia framework capable of reading most audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac ...) as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
AlltoAvi
This project is a tool to convert especially ogm and mkv files to avi, with subtitle and audio track selection, video resizing, bitrate selection and codec selection. I have not found much it cannot convert.
Creatoon
With this you can create some pretty good animations - using standard images and nodes. Offered Free due to a management decision.
ImgBurn
A program used in creating, burning, and copying cds & dvds. I use it often when creating dvds and burning from images.
Camstudio
Used to record actions occurring on your screen. It can be used to create tutorials for complcated tasks.
Open Office
A free alternative to Microsoft's Office package and can even view and manipulate files saved in the microsoft formats.
Irfanview
An image manipulation program. This can also compile and play .swf files. I use it mainly when needing to batch convert or scale an image.
Avisynth
Video compiling software used for complicated videos where more than one clip is used. Check it out for a better explanation.
Blender
A free 3d model and animation studio. I have not used this much.
Pencil
A free drawing and animation program. I have not used this much.
Synfig
Two-dimensional animation has long been the domain of proprietary software. That changes with the introduction of Synfig, a free software/open source tool for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources. I have not used this much.
