Ok, being 100% honest - I REALLY LIKE THIS SONG!!! Alrighty... now that, that is over. This song really depicts what God did for us in sending His son Jesus to earth. We, us humans, were first made of the dust of the earth. (Gen 2:7) AND in order to save us from our sins, God had to come as his Son as one of us, made of dirt peoples. So, he married the dirt - became one with the mud. Not even speaking of the actual, we are dirty and muddy spiritually - and Jesus looked with love to us anyway, became one of us anyway. His job was not just to die on a cross (though that was a great and very important part of it!). Jesus taught us everything we need to know to truly live upon this earth as perfect and 'clean' spiritual beings covered in 'dirt' :) Because Jesus was born he was able to walk with us - AS one of us, fully feeling and desiring as we do, BUT he lived WITHOUT sinning. Just like those animals that probably served as the covering for Adam and Eve, Jesus has done NOTHING wrong deserving of the penalty of death.
He married the dirt, to be one of us - to show us the true way of life and how it is possible to live it. With us - giving up ourselves and letting Him live through us. Because of His sinless life He, and because He gave it up for us - his life takes the place of ours - that we may not sin any longer, and can live a life that is possible of perfection!
This is what Christmas is about. God's marriage proposal to all. He did not just go to one knee and hold up a giant diamond, with some silly smile on His face, He stepped down from the throne of heaven, became as dirt, showed us the perfect path of life - died on a cross, SATISFIED of the finishing of His work here on earth! We only have to accept the offer!
