2 Samuel 2&3
The Life and Death of Abner
Interesting thing.. we know that Abner was the one that helped to find out David's family after David killed Goliath
It was common to have family members as leaders in the armies (as Abi put it.. they did not have 'conflict of interests' back then)
Abner was commander of Saul's Army.. but also he was Saul's 1st cousin
.. To catch up .. Saul and Johnathan are dead
The kingdom is now divided.. between .. Judah that looked towards David.. and the rest loyal to Ish-bosheth
This is one of the craziest battles (very short) ... Champions are sent out to fight for each group
All 24 'Champions' died in one of the most odd ways... and this led to a full out battle
Asahel dies after chasing Abner and running himself through .. by the butt end of Abner's spear
These deaths are some of these craziest we all have ever read .. in almost anywhere (oddly enough Monty Python was brought up at this point)
Abner calls for the killing to end..
After a bit of other things.. Abner is accused of something and calls foul about the accusation (what he was accused of could have been considered him trying to take the hierarchy)
Abner shows at this time that he has truly accepted that David is the new king ... wholeheartedly
David sets one condition ... getting Michal back as his wife (his first wife.. 'won' after defeating Goliath)
Abner does this .. and even so Isbosheth even helps in this matter
Abner later is stabbed by Joab for the death of his brother.. David does not take claim to this action and 'shuns' Joab's actions
David mourns.. and calls an order to have others mourn him as well
