Now, I have not been able to mow my own grass for a little while due to an problem I may write about in the future, and this occurred during a period of time I was regularly cutting. That said... let us move on...
I was mowing the grass one day... and did not have much gas in the mower when I started - I was pretty certain I would need more, the trouble was I had none left in my gas can either, if it ran out - I would be stuck having to travel down the street to pick up more gas. So what was my solution?
Prayer!
Sweet, sweet wonderful prayer. I masterfully executed the perfect prayer for the situation, "Please, dear Lord, let this little bit of gas be enough for me to at least finish the back yard". Ah.. wonderful.. my genius has no bounds!!
I mowed the entire backyard and just let the little guy keep on rollin' onto the front, and I decided to get a bit cocky with my prayer stating, "If it keeps going beyond me finishing my front yard, I will mow the neighbor's yard". Now my prayer is HUGE.. encompassing that of those people I do not know very well, and in turn I would be loving my neighbor as I love myself... I would very much enjoy having my neighbor mow my lawn randomly, without any strings.
I am very much certain this prayer was uttered in a moment I decided to lean on my understanding of the usage of fuel for my little grass cutter. There was no way it was going to last the full front yard and keep going... no way.
Have you ever heard the statement "God has a sense of humor" or maybe even said it. Well, regardless if you believe it or not - my situation was as thus :
That little bugger just kept on going... I kept on mowing - the sun beating me down moment by moment, and all of a sudden something miraculous happened...
I finished... it all
I would love to say the next part of this tale is about how I went on to mow my neighbors yard and shared the abounding love of God with them resulting in the falling of the Holy Spirit and Baptism in the streets... really I would love to tell it that way, but alas it is not how it transpired.
The mower may have been able to continue on, but big strong super prayer warrior me... was OUT OF GAS!!
I was spent... I could move no more.. I went inside, collapsed on the couch, and went ahead and asked forgiveness for the non-fulfillment of my earlier promise.
Even without the baptisms and pillars of fire from the Holy Spirit I got something from the experience... Something I knew before, though am in need of remembrance ever so often.
God is faithful, even when we are not!
2 Timothy 2:13 NLT
If we are unfaithful,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot deny who he is.
I could go ahead and tell you my prayer was inconsiderate..and if I had asked for more then I likely could have done more and blessed more...maybe that is true but what I really got out of all of this is that in prayer we should ask for what we are in need of, and if God decides to over fill the 'cup', accept the blessing with true thanks... And don't beat yourself up over the promise you may have made (or better yet.. Learn to only make them when YOU MEAN THEM)
Have you ever prayed and got more than you bargained for?
he remains faithful,
for he cannot deny who he is.
