What Savvy taught on tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

Lesson taught by Savannah, notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 20

David and Johnathan

This is right after the battle with the Philistines and starts the close nit friendship of David and Johnathan

Saul is now jealous of David because of the clout David was getting from the people

David was really doing good for the people whne Sauk was not.. It was much like David was accidentally filling. The role Of king That Saul was failing

When Saul asked for the killing of David... The friendship to Johnathan saves him

Saul promises that he would not kill David

Johnathan then moves to warn David and David is confused with the reason why Saul would do such a thing (I guess the promise was not held very well)

Johnathan is willing to do anything in order to protect David

They create a plan to 'catch' Saul in his dislike and desire to harm David

Johnathan is ready and willing to die if the plan goes wrong.. This is a deep seated friendship!

Johnathan seems to have a much better faith in God than his father.. This really could be the likely reason that the friendship between David and Johnathan blossomed

With this information learned they now know how Saul feels about David

David is sent the message and they part ways

The friendship here is so great that it transcends thus insane situation.. They were genuine and honest with one another

Johnathan is willing to put his life on the line... Would you do this for a friend

Thier Lives showed their friendships

Many times we may have 'two-faced' attitudes.. This type of thought is contagious.. We should not want it and do our best to avoid it

It is one thing to work together and help one another but another when you are just being mean.. You tone could change the receiver of how you give them the information

EP. 4:25 be how you are going to be all the time!

Walk in love! David and Johnathan had this and it should be encouraging to belive that we can have this relationship with others

This also is like our relationship with Jesus

David never puts himself equal or greater than Jonathan much like Jesus does for us

Jesus showed this in washing the feet of His Diciples.. Would you be willing to wash the feet of your greater? Equals? Lessers?

Jesus gave his life for us.. Greater than Johnathan bring willing to.. Jesus had to go that far. Our friendship with Christ should be greater than this one that David had with Johnathan!

Have a blessed day and enjoy your friends!

What derk taught on tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

Lesson taught by derk.. Notes taken by Peden

1 Samuel 17

Derek is doing a maby card trick. David is represented by the king of Spades. In this corner we have the champion for the Philistines with his suit of armor alone weighing in at 125 pounds standing a towering 9 feet 9 inches tall! Goliath of the Philistines. In the other corner a young naive and unequiped boy, David. Let's just jump back alittle bit. David the youngest of Jesse's eight sons, who was left at home to watch after the sheep was concerned about the battle against the Philistines, so he went to the battlefield to investigate. Ariving at the battlefield he is met with a brother who in an attempt to discourage David from his inquiries about why the Israelites hadn't fought off the Philistines yet. His questioning apparently was intimidating enough that Saul called for him. Saul rebukes David by telling him that he was too young. David replied that he had rescued one of his sheep from the jaws from both a lion and the bear. Saul impressed by Davids story, attempted to equipt David with armor. David trys the armor on; however, it didn't feel right so instead he just decided to trust solely in God. As we all know David then went selected 5 stones then went forth to the battlefield. Although Goliath came out in complete armor and armed to the teeth, David trusting in the Lord stepped forth. The young, ignorant, and illequipped David, trusts solely in the Lord and slays Goliath. The main thing to get out of this entire lesson is that David, although he could have used any of the excuses,(too young, ignorance of the events of the battle, illequipped) however he trusted in the Lord and just did it. Trust in the Lord and just do.

What Tim taught on tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

Lesson taught by Tim and notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 16

After talking about Saul's mistake from last week's lesson we move into God's plan to fix the problem

Samuel is in mourning because of Saul but God is ready to move on and start the new

Do we regret our past so much that it hinders our future?

If we spend so much time in regret the we will fail to achieve what God has for us in our future.

Interesting that Samuel goes under one purpose but really is going for a larger purpose.

The people of the town are scared of Samuel but because of his pretense of sacrifice they go along with him, yet the purpose was much grander.

Samuel is told from the beginning how to choose according to God's sight instead of man's.

1 Corinthians 1:26, 27

Thus deals with certain things that can make us feel discouraged about our abilities but it is exactly that that God wants to 'confound' the world

None of the sons were chosen.. The youngest is called for and found to be the one to be anointed king

The thing about David is that he was certainly young and small so there is no way someone would pick him to rule!

"Sometime we think that things just to little to or insignificant for God when in reality it's those things that he wants the most. We have a habit of being self sufficient as Christians when what we should be doing is relying on God in everything including the little things.

1 thessalonian 5:16-18

1 Peter 5:6-7

God cares about the small stuff - to start trying to do all that yourself only keeps God out of your life.

The spirit that overcomes Saul is even taken care of by God though it was David himself that soothed

David is the southern of Saul and in the future to come will be a soother of Israel

What Abi taught ok tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

Lesson taught by Abi, notes takes by derk

1 Samuel 15

First jump (Exodus 17:8-16)

This jump was written in a scroll to be remembered... And we see this come up here in 1 Samuel

It was the time that God decided to 'collect' on this promise

Saul sets up the army and is now ready to attack

They were instructed to take them out completely, but that is not what Saul did

God spoke to Samuel and sent the need or reprimand to Saul about how he (saul) messed up by not following instructions

Saul actually greets Samuel with good tidings and the thought that he did so well, but of course this is not true

This is very much like what happened when Moses came down from Sinai and found the people worshiping an idol... Yet Aaron had such an amazing response -like Saul's

Samuel responds to Saul's 'excuses' with "to obey is better than sacrifice" which is really one of the most awesome parts of scripture... In it is some powerful words that are much repeated throughout scripture

Psalm 40.. Heb 10:5-10, Psalm 51:16, 17, Proverbs 21:3, Matt 9:13, 12:7,

Are you focused on sacrifice or the obedience?

Saul was not focused on the right thing... Yes he was the leader but it did not ever mean he was doing the RIGHT thing

He did what he THOUGHT he should be doing instead of doing what was asked of him

Saul now is given his 'two week notice'

Samuel kills Agag to 'cleanse' the mistake

Saul from now is left on his own (without wise counsel)

What Savvy taught on tonight... If you missed out!! (CRY)

Lesson taught by Savannah, notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 14

The Bravery of Jonathan

Last week or at.. The end of chapter 13 we learned the the Hebrews did not have proper weapons (this is good to know starting this chapter)

In the first few lines... It seems that Jonathan does not really have a plan with what is going on

Saul had 600 men and an ephod wearer (a priest was with them) and Jonathan is 'missing'

Jonathan has faith in God and is ready for God to work in this situation - we can see that his faith was great because of the armor bearer's trust in Jonathan.

Did the 'plan' work? (YES) <it is interesting to see the non-fear of the Philistines but yet two men take out twenty!

What does this show you about Jonathan?

A great faith in God
A go getter
A very brave man

The Philistine army is now terrified due to God putting it on them and then at this time that Saul and the rest of the men realize that they are missing Johnathan and his armorbearer.

Amazingly the Philistines are struck by confusion and begin the fight one another

Saul then addresses his priest - and decides to NOT consult God and to just run into battle! (it seems like because the battle 'looks' like it is an easy win he decides to skip making sure that God is ready for them to actually move forward)

The Isrealites win the battle

We have seen over and over again that Saul is impatient... Making an offering that is not his to make.. Running to fight without consultation of God

Remember that Saul has made an oath that causes the army to not to be able to eat, but expects them to fight... His oath is all about the selfish desires that he (saul) has... Where is that reassuring 'we' or the GOD
that they need to win anyway

Jonathan does not know about the oath and eats, but actually is rejuvenated because of this. Everyone is now concerned that the oath is now broken and what will happen to Jonathan!

Jonathon does not see a problem with what he has done and asks if they all would have eaten then the battle would be easier because they would be stronger and healthier!

The men were so hungry that they ate meat with the blood in it... Therefore sinning

Much of this could have been prevented with consultation of God at the beginning...

Saul is sure to fix the problem of how the men were eating the meat, but this really does not 'fix' his initial mistake

Now Saul decides to go and destroy the Philistines, but the priest asks to consult God and others tell him to do what he wants

God does not answer... Why not?

Saul vows that the one at fault should die, even if it is Jonathan!

Jonathan is the one shown to be the oath breaker and is ready to accept his death so that the nation's connection to God can be healed!

The people decide that Jonathan should not die because he is a hero...

Saul does not keep his word... And as we saw above the people are ok with it... The problem here is that no one is keeping Saul accountable!

With Saul as the King his rein is filled with 'bitter war' and he looks for mighty and brave men to fill his ranks... But not really those that are spiritual

His strength surrounding him is more physical and not spiritual

John 17:1-5

Even Christ dies not point to himself, but to His father!

Do you ever rush in just because it looks like an 'easy win'?

Have you ever had faith like Jonathan and won a great victory like him?

Why or why not?

Do you make oaths that you later break?

If so, what happened?

Do you accept consequences for the wrong things you have done, or do you blame others and hope no one holds you accountable?

How much better can things be if you do them in God's timing?

What Peden taught on tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

1 Samuel 13

Saul makes a mistake

-

This story begins more as the beginning of Saul's fall

Saul's son attacks the Philistines but Saul takes credit but this was common (in a family for the father to take credit like this)

The Philistines are now ready to attack back

The common occurrence that happens with Isreal.. They are promised something and then a looming problem has them stumble and lose trust. This is a time like this

Saul was told by Samuel the time frame that the offering would be made but Saul loses sight of the goal and the actual law and decides to make the offering himself!

He saw this more as a ritual instead of an honest thing thst needed to bd done with reverence.

Samuel accuses Saul of acting foolishly and now they (the Israelites are punished... Much as the promise told them from verse 12)

The Philistines were the people that sharpened and worked their weapons so the Isrealites, while bring as war with them lacked proper weapons.

The day of the battle only Saul and Johnathan have swords... How will this turn out (tune in next week)

Let us turn our focus to the mistake of Saul... Doing the RIGHT thing at the WRONG time!

James 1:2, 3

Notice that James does not say "if" but when... We shoukd certainly be prepared!

The burnt offerings were given to God as praise but you need to believe yhat He is going to do it and follow through with our actions

'rejoice in your trials'

God does not answer prayers immediately, but trust that He will!

If you flounder... You WILL fail!

What Tim taught on tonight... If you missed out (CRY)

Lesson taught by Tim, notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 9 & 10

Saul chosen to be king

Saul was taller and extremely handsome - would you pick this king?

God was giving the Israelites exactly what they wanted, but us this what they actually needed?

How many times do we go to God, and not bring anything to meet Him with (Saul was concerned about this in meeting a man of God)

Saul even had humbleness in the acceptance of the roll of king

God gives us the ability that we need to do what He needs us to do - even if we do not think that we are good enough to do it.

Sometimes we rebel even when God gives us what we want..

If you were choosing a king what kind of person would you pick?

Has God ever appointed you to do something and given you a heart to do it?

Have you ever asked God for something and received it but decided that you didn't like it at all?

Have you ever asked and got something else that was better than you asked for.?

What Savvy taught on tonight ... If you missed out

Lesson taught by Savannah and notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 8

The Isrealites ask for a king

They are warned about what having a king will do to them as a nation, but they do not care - they just want to be like everyone else!

"Listen to them and give them a king "

It is interesting that even Samuel's sons turned away from God just like Eli's did... Samuel was the one to call him (Eli) out on it, yet made the same mistake somehow.

She asked about gaining a king Samuel wisely seeks God's council and eases the wound by letting Samuel know that the people are rejecting God... Not Samuel.

On one hand this could be reassuring to the person of Samuel, but ultimately it is a great disappointment. Jesus let the Diciples know this as well, knowing that they would face opposition!

The people want a KING to fight their battles (HELLO where have you been? Has not God been f

Doing this?)

The 'cool' thing to do is like this now. We can want what is cool and what the people that seem to have better than us have - but in the process you LOSE God!

God chooses the king... Is He still choosing them?

1. The importance that God has put on legacy

What does that mean? We need to have things that make us remember what God has done for us and let others know about those. This can mean SO MUCH for someone!

2. God will always behave within HIS character

In giving the people what they wanted He let them know what that would mean and LET them CHOOSE it on their own. Later. They would blame HIM for a choice that was truly theirs!

Sometimes we want a part of the character of God based on where you are, but it may not be what His will us for you right now.

Where has God brought you?

Who is it that you want God to be?

Is that in His perfect will for you right now?

What Mel taught on tonight... If you missed out!

Lesson taught by Mel, and derk took notes

Proverbs 2 (this was a requested lesson)

Solomon giving wisdom to the young that really applies to all

We NEED the wisdom of God.

Chapter 16

"When girls have friends, they want people who think & act like them. When a girl has a boyfriend, she wants someone who is her complete opposite. " -Keith Harding

Men are not always who they say they are... And women are not always who they say they are.

The true trouble is that it is mainly hormones that you are dealing with.

Guarding our hearts : a rose if giving a 'petal' away everytime you invest your heart... Your rose may be barren by the time you move towards marriage.

Make a decision and STICK WITH It!

Dating should be about marriage, if not - you are destroying your chance to have a successful marriage.

You teach yourself how to fail.

What are 'non-negotiables'

A real life example.

1. God is his Savior & Lord

2. He loves me

3. He respects my father & mother & his father & mother

4. He works with joy no matter what he is doing. He gives his best always.

5. His view in kids is Psalm 127:3

Yours will probably not be the same, but can you come up with 5 things that you will not budge on?

Are you praying for your future spouse? Why not?

What Melanie taught tonight... If you missed out! (CRY)

Lesson taught by Melanie, notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 7

The Isrealites have the ark back (just to catch up)

Samuel called to the nation to turn from the false idols they had taken on

They did and God spoke by thunder

Samuel took a stone and called it Ebenezer

What is your Ebenezer?

What is something that reminds you of something that God has brought you though?

Knowing these can keep your faith strong, understanding where your weakness is and how God brings you through it can encourage you through what you may be facing now!

Spouses

Vehicles

A person you tried to avoid, and yet provided you with much

A Teacher

A bracelet

It can be anything, but remember that these are important!

What Savannah taught on tonight ... If you missed out

Lesson taught by Savannah... Notes taken by derk

1 Samuel 1 Hannah and Samuel

Hannah was barren - yet her husband would give her a double portion because of his love for her.

To be a woman and be barren was a bad thing as a wife because it took away importance from them.

Hannah decided to go to God and ask for a son.

A priest that was there assumed that she was drunk and actually ended up blessing her request after learning the truth of her desire to have a child.

When you do not gain a desire you wish to have we try to earn it

We may become depressed. Hannah went to the Lord, and but she asks with respect.

Psalm 20:4 talks about our desires and God's desire for us to have those.

In the end we see the Lord faithful to Hannah, but also Hannah faithful to the Lord!

Hannah brings her son to Eli - to the temple of the Lord!

Hannah made a vow that she knew that she could complete (unlike others that choose vows that bite back)

She did not do this just for herself but also for her husband and even possibly Samuel herself!

... God is not surprised by anything. His guidance will bring us to the desires of our hearts.

How did Hannah pray?

She exults the Lord - she acknowledged the power of God - she thanks him.

Regardless of what you have worked for or accomplished God sees us all the same.

The gifts that God gives are SO MUCH SWEETER. Sometimes we settle for the first thing offered instead of the best thing offered!

Samuel was born at the perfect time that he was needed - such a powerful life through this true following of God!

Some questions to think on?

Is there anything in your life that your life that you may need to dedicate to God!

When you pray, what is your focus?

Have you ever put your faith in God to provide for you?

What Hannah taught on tonight ... if you missed out

Lesson taught by Hannah - notes taken by derk

The Book of Ruth

Chapter one : famine. > no food

Naomi's husband died - then the sons died - a widow with no kids

She traveled with her daughter's inlaw and asks them to return to where they left from, but Ruth 'clung ' to her.

Normally motherinlaw means a bad thing now a days but not with them. Shown by how Ruth stays with her

They went to Bethlehem

Almighty. Yet in calling Him that it seems Naomi is not really seeing him AS the Almighty.

Chapter 2

Ruth goes to work in a field belonging to Boaz which is a relative of Naomi - this actually catches the eye of Boaz, who now wishes her to stay!

'Why have I found favor in your eye - being a foreigner'

He gives her food and even makes sure that she has a bit easier time to get what she needed as she works.

Ruth was not just doing this for herself - her motherinlaw was in need(this was one of the only ways for them to get food) and Boaz knew of this.

Chapter 3

Is it time to find a husband?

Ruth goes to lay down over the feet of Boaz in pursuing him as a husband. He accepts - even gifting Naomi and going about the accepting of it 'properly '(there was another that would normally be more acceptable for marriage - Boaz showed his honor in that he let this choice occur)

Chapter 4

The way this happens with the purchasing of land _ the other man declines due to the fact of inheretance.

The marriage occurs. > and now the lineage of Naomi will continue.

This marriage actually was the 'creation' of Obed, the grandfather of King David.

So without this 'love story' the lineage of Jesus is gone. Therefore the 'love story' of God may have died there as well.

What dErK taught tonight ... if you missed out

V

Lesson taught by Derek - Notes taken by Savannah

Judges 19

Isreal had no king. That's how it always starts.
No direction or leadership.

No names mentioned in this story. Which is probably done for a reason. BC this is not a pretty story.
This story is not a pretty picture of Christianity IF you don't take it the right way.

Levite had a concubine. An unfaithful one.
Goes to the father's house to get her back.
Fatheebtries to keep him there but levite wants to leave. Did the father maybe have insight as trouble what would happen when they left?
*never does it say anywhere "God said"
regardless of servants suggestions, levite will not stop in a non isrealite city. Too dangerous.
Spent the night in gibeah, no one would give them board. Offense to God not to house a levite in need.
Finally old Mann let them stay.

Derek: "and then we get. To the bad part."
Peden: "WOAH "
Derek: "yeah stop reading for a minute "

NOTE. THE LEVITE BYPASSED FOREIGN CITIES TO AVOID TROUBLE.

BUT. Isrealites attacked the house demanding to lay with the levite.
Old man: "no but here have my virgin daughter and this concubine"
Raped and abused concubine till day break. She crawled back and died at the door step.
Levite comes out and just says "get up. Lets go."
Takes her home, cuts her up into twelve pieces to send to the tribes.
Vs 30 "everyone who saw it said, 'such a thing has never been seen or done, since the days of the isrealites came up out of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!'"

How could the levite be so dense? So unaffected?
Obviously he was upset, but vengeance rather. Than necessarily remorse.
His sentence to the tribes.

Hosea 9:9,"they have sunk deep into corruption, as in the days of gibeah. God will remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins."

Hosea 10:9, "since the days of gibeah, you have sinned, Israel, and there you have remained. Will not war again overtake the evildoers in gibeah?"

God remembers.

You want to look at the Bible and think "these are the answers. Good, clean, perfect." But perfect doesn't mean what you think it means.
If it only told us the good things, we couldn't believe it as truth. "If Peden never told me bad news, he is probably lying."
This story shows us that God doesn't hide things.
"The whole truth and nothing but the truth."
Sometime God is the only good Guy.

"It has a lot to do with timing. I don't think David was a man after God's own heart when he was up on Bathsheba." Derek

Life is rated R.

What Mel Taught On Tonight ... if you missed out

Lesson taught by Mel - Notes taken by Serennah

-----

Micah 17. Micah stole from his mom 1100 sheckels. Then, she blessed him for admitting it. In return, she carved him an idol for his house. Later on, Micah found a levite to be his priest...maybe to clear his conscience? What a generous man, right? He gave the levite 10 sheckels per year, a place to live, food, and one whole change of clothes. That's almost 1 scheckel per month.

What do we rest on other people's coat tails for?
Are we 'covered' because our prayer warrior friend is praying for us? Are we good for the week because we went to church? Do we do things expecting a Thank You?

Thank people and acknowledge how they were used by God. You don't want to build their ego, you want to build Christ in them.

Do you ever feel funny accepting a "good job!" when you know God deserves all the credit?

Ask for God's words, not yours. Remember that no man comes to the Father but by Christ. God uses other people and their coat tails to bless us, but by Christ is the only way to reach Him in our relationship with Him. We can't rely on other people to be holy for us.

Micah 18. Beware of following God for selfish gain. We are called to be selfless. Only then, God can give us back abundant life.

Isn't it enough that He died for my sins?
Even if God doesn't deliver me, I know that He can.

No matter what you're going through, praise your way through it.

We have to be the faith in this world for people who don't have faith. Let people ride on our coat tails, then disciple them. Christ had 12 men on His coat tails. Only 12 men. Yet He impacted the entire world. Those are big coat tails. One's you should want to ride on.

what are you willing to sacrifice to accomplish your dream? (CRY)

What are you willing to sacrifice to accomplish your dream?
(Notes taken by Melanie)

Judges 11- Jephthah

He was driven off - worthless men joined with him
They raided together.
The people of Israel were under attack and they called for Jephthah to be their leader.

Things get insane when Jephthah decided to talk to God.
He asked for God to deliver them into his hand.
He defeated them and had made a deal with God that whatever came to meet him he would offer as a burnt sacrifice.

Unfortunately for him his daughter came to meet him.
She willingly accepted her fate after she mourned her virginity.
A lot of times we have to do things we don't want to but we must stand by our word.

God gave us his word to teach us what not to do.

Jesus was not the only human sacrifice but he was the perfect sacrifice.
Don't make a promise you aren't prepared to keep.
Don't compromise your integrity.
(Apparently derek has spirit particles)

So what are you willing to sacrifice?

Are you living a life with upright integrity?

Hurts, Habits, and Hangups

What would you define as a "hurt" in your life?

What about the word "habit"?

And "hangups"?

_------_

What are some things you can consider that would one of these three things that are no in our control?

Is it ever not possible to get out of any of these three things (with help) ?

Even if we need help to do it, it does NOT have to stay in our way!

Even Satan can be controlled.

James 4:7 KJV

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Can doubt and uncertainity keep you from getting through these kinds of things?

What steps can we go through to get through hurts, habits, and hangups.
Do you have an accountablility partner?

Do you have just one?

Do you possess these qualities?
